Trees Have Rhythm Too!
No really! This is the sound of a cottonwood tree, captured by composer and bio-acoustician Bernie Krause. While out recording the sounds of bats he picked up a peculiar signal, which got stronger nearer a cottonwood tree. After drilling a small hole and inserting a microphone Krause managed to record the high frequency signal. What you can hear has been slowed down to get it within human hearing range. Apparently the noise occurs when cells in the tree pop while trying to maintain pressure during a drought. However, I can’t get the image of tap dancing wood nymphs out of my head! I’ll leave you to decide which explanation you prefer…

Over the last few years the Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab has seen it’s fan base grow and grow. And no wonder, when you see the olfactory delights they have on offer. They focus on the dark, bewitching and mysterious, and there are plenty of Faerie themed scents to choose from. For example ‘Fae – A brilliant, ethereal scent: white musk, bergamot, heliotrope, peach and oakmoss’; the milk, honey and grain based ‘Dana O’Shee’ or the intoxicating ‘Leanan Sidhe - a crush of Irish herbs and flowers, Gaelic mists, and night time dew’. The Illyria collection includes scents for the Faerie King and Queen themselves, Oberon and Titania.
There is a sometimes bewildering array of different scents to chose from, but don’t worry. Samples (or Imps Ears as they’re called) are available. There is also a network of BPAL customers who swap unwanted scents if you don’t feel suited to the perfumes you chose.
Competition Winner Annnounced

The lucky winner of the first Fae Nation competition is Veronica ShyFae from Jacksonville, Florida.
She has won the pewter leaf dish pictured.
Well done, and thank you to everyone that entered!
Stay tuned for more competitions in the near future.

Here is a new painting from Doktor A, artist and behind the scenes helper at Fae Nation.
It’s actually a set of six canvases that join to form a tree, each with it’s own little striped Pixie. Each canvas also works as a picture in its own right.
Like the seven dwarfs (only there are six of them and I wouldn’t trust them to rescue and damsels in distress) there is Curious Pixie, Lazy Pixie, Pixie Frolic, Pixie Lookout, Playful Pixie and Spooky Pixie.
The set is available to buy from Spookypop for £350 for all six.
