The Art of Frances Tyrrell

July 4th, 2006

The Illustrated Fairy Gazette

I have been enchanted by Frances Tyrrell’s art since seeing the lovely little cut out fairy dolls in an issue of Faerie Magazine. Her paintings invoke the fairy illustrations of yesteryear, and artists such as Cicely Mary Barker and Ida Rentoul Outhwaite. Frances’ beautifully illustrated picture books are collected by both children and adults, and tell tales of magical forests, Christmas miracles and enchanted beaches.
Along with her mother Avril, Frances also produces the Illustrated Fairy Gazette – the first ‘Fairy-to-Fairy’ publication. It is a tiny 4.25 x 5.5 inches and each sixteen page magazine is hand stitched with rainbow thread.
If you are in the Ontario area you can see some of Frances’ art in person at the Midsummer Magic exhibition at Sovereign House, Oakville during July. Please see her website for more details.
