Duirwaigh Gallery - A Knock on the Duir

Duirwaigh Gallery is releasing its film ‘A Knock on the Door’ as a special limited edition book and DVD set. Inspired by the thousands of letters and the incredibly positive response from people, the book and DVD set was created to allow people to ‘give’ the film in a more tangible way as the perfect present. The hardback book features the artwork from the film so you can see the glorious detail, and the DVD is a revamped version which includes even more Duirwaigh artists.
It will be available in September, and you can pre-order the set from the Duirwaigh site. A portion of the proceeds are donated to the Make A Wish foundation, making wishes come true for terminally ill children.
Duirwaigh is a truly inspirational gallery that brings together some of the shining stars in the fantasy and visionary art genres. It also encompasses a publishing house and artist management service, and hopes to one day include a ‘Center for Inspiration’. Visitors to the site can buy both original artworks and prints, gifts and other collectables.

The Orkney Faerie Museum

Interior of the Orkney Faerie Museum

I wrote yesterday about Neil and Alicen Geddes-Ward’s book Faeriecraft. The couple have also established a Faerie Museum on the island of Westray, Orkney. Housed in a converted Orkadian croft house, it features Neil’s art and sculptures by Shirley Ann McKillop, and tells the stories of Orkney’s Faerie inhabitants, those from Scottish legends and further a field. It is free to visit, and open 7 days a week from mid-April to September 30th. On Saturdays there is a children’s story telling session, and new attractions are being developed. There are also gifts available to buy.
The Orkneys, as well as being home to a great variety of Fair Folk, are covered in prehistoric sites and dramatic landscapes – sure to make a memorable holiday.

Faeriecraft: Treading the Path of Faerie Magic

July 13th, 2006

Faeriecraft Book

Written by Faerie Priestess Alicen Geddes-Ward and illustrated by her husband Neil, Faeriecraft is a book for people who want to deepen their connection to Faerie. It is a spiritual path based on a Wiccan framework but is more inclusive and approachable. The topics range from introductions to the Fae and Faerieland, creating an altar, visualisations and meditations, and ideas for rite of passage rituals. The Faeriecraft website gives you a sampling of what the book and path has to offer. There is also The Faerie Fellowship, which is a sister site to Faeriecraft, where followers of the path can meet and work together.
Alicen is currently writing another book on Faeries, this time collecting together people’s real life experiences and is looking for readers to submit their own stories.

Fairy Box Children’s Charity

July 12th, 2006

The Fairy Box is a Scottish based charity that exists to support ill children in hospital, their families and the medical and nursing staff involved in their care. The box in question is a themed gift box kept in the ward full of donated books, toys and games, so that parents, medical and nursing staff can choose a gift for a child that is undergoing a difficult time while in hospital.
The charity’s aim is provide a Fairy Box for every children’s ward in Scotland, and are looking for donations of new toys, books, games, CDs and DVDs suitable for children aged 2 – 12, not necessarily with a magical or fairy theme. They also welcome cash donations, or you could perhaps attend one of their fundraisers, which in the past has included an art exhibition and a tea party.
