Thyme
Long thought to be a Faerie favourite, Thyme (especially wild Thyme) is said to aid sightings of the Fair Folk. Thyme that grows on Faerie Mounds is the most potent – if you pick the flowers and lay them on your eyes it will allow you to see the Fae, and sprinkling dried Thyme on your windowsills and doorways will invite the Fae to enter your home. It is also one of the herbs listed as an ingredient for a magical ointment to see faeries in a 17th Century manuscript (now at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford).

After five years of attending Renaissance Faires across California, the Faerie enthusiasts who make up The League of Robin Goodfellow have now become a formal Guild. Their mission is to delight and entertain the public, while educating them on Renaissance-era faerie beliefs. While joining the League may not be suitable for everyone, they do have an excellent ‘Faery Handbook’ available to read on-line. Filed under Entertainment, Resources & Community | Comment (0)
Grow Your Own Horns

“Sometimes a faery will appear with horns or antlers curving above her head. This is an example of how faeries express themselves through mythic symbols, for faery horns represent the process of renewal, regrowth, and rebirth. They are also a physical manifestation of intuitive animal powers.”
– Brian Froud, ‘Good Faeries/Bad Faeries’
Horns are quite essential for many a faerie costume, whether natural forest spirit or something a little more glittery and glitzy. For the crafty among you why not make your own - Phobe.com has an excellent guide for making them from polymer clay. If sculpting and painting your own is a little too much, Pan’s House of Horns have a great selection available.

For fantasy artists finding good references for figure drawing can sometimes be tricky – you can turn to adverts or pose books but these options can leave art looking very generic. Shy Faerie (aka Nedda Shishegar, June’s Artist of the Month) has collected together various photos with herself as model for use as reference by her fellow fantasy artists. Far from being an exercise in narcissism, they are very useful images. And besides, who wouldn’t want to look at pictures of such a lovely lady! Filed under Art & Illustration | Comment (0)
