The Fairy Ring Association

Conceived as an international circle of friends who love faeries and angels, the Fairy Ring is a non-profit organisation based in the beautiful North Yorkshire coast. Founded in 1999 by Susan Hewitt, the association’s aim is to further the knowledge, love and respect for faeries and nature spirits as well as raise awareness of the magic found in this world. Annual membership includes a special certificate and membership card as well as subscription to ‘Fairy Tales’ – a quarterly journal.

From urban faeries to steampunk gothic, the paintings of David Gough draw you into a somewhat murky underworld where you had best watch your back. A commercial artist and designer for 20 years, David’s work has been featured in numerous RPG’s, comics, books and CD covers. Originally from the UK he now resides in California but exhibits internationally.

Two similar and equally nasty entities from English folklore are Jenny Greenteeth and Peg Powler. Both inhabit bodies of water, Jenny preferring stagnant pools while Peg haunts the river Tees in the North of England. Children who unwisely played too close to the waters edge would be dragged under by these spirits and drowned (or worse, devoured). The origins of these types of entities are probably cautionary tales to scare children away from playing near water, where the risk of drowning is all too real.

From France comes Atelier des Elfes - a beautiful collection of Faerie and nature inspired jewellery, featuring leaves, fairies and butterflies on flowing organic curves, accented with gemstones. There are many wonderful and unique designs including headdresses, slave bracelets, necklaces and earrings in silver, gold and bronze finishes. My favourites though are the ear wraps – the wire fits neatly behind your ear leaving a small charm at the lobe and trailing tendrils from the top of your ear across your cheekbone.

‘Master wing artisan’ May Burnett is the creator of quite the most stunning wings I have seen in a long time. They are completely handmade and can incorporate your favourite shapes, colours, patterns and accessories to create a unique set of wings whatever the occasion. May uses silk to form the wing membrane, which is then hand painted to your specifications, giving a light yet luminous appearance. They come on clear straps which are detachable, allowing the wearer to slip the frame down the back of a corset for greater versatility and a ‘real’ wing look. And, for those days when wings just aren’t practical, May also produces a range of t-shirts featuring colourful wings on the back.
