Pan’s Labyrinth

Pan’s Labyrinth, a dark fairy tale from Mexican director Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy, Cronos, Blade 2) has received record standing ovations at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and a rapturous reception at the Toronto film festival. It is a companion piece to his earlier film ‘The Devil’s Backbone’ also set against the backdrop of the Spanish civil war. The story follows Ofelia, a little girl who moves to the country with her mother and new stepfather and soon discovers something strange in the nearby forest.
Del Toro said of the look of the film; “Pan´s design/concept was totally based on the aesthetic of Arthur Rackham - and so are the fairies, the giant tree trunk and a giant frog.”
Its a very dark and brutal film but also uplifting and beautiful. A mixture of historical drama and high fantasy delivered in Del Toro’s own special wonderful twisted way.
Opens in the UK in October and the USA in December.

It was such a beautiful film… I can see how the brutal aspects may put people off, but for me it only reinforced the fantastic elements.
