Fairies by Yoshitaka Amano

Yoshitaka Amano’s luscious art and illustrations are immensely popular in both his native Japan and the rest of the world (in the West he is probably best known for his illustrations for the Sandman ‘The Dream Hunters’ graphic novel). His flowing organic style is very much reminiscent of Gustav Klimt, Arthur Rackham and Alphonse Mucha, and would appeal to those who like their art ethereal. In ‘Fairies’ he explores the characters of Shakespeare, folklore, Celtic, and Arthurian myth – from the Knockers of Cornwall to the mysterious Merlin and the Enchantress Nimue. Each of the illustrations is accompanied by a poem or story drawing on traditional tales. There is also a very interesting essay by Kimie Imura included in the book giving a Japanese take on the phenomenon of Faerie.
