The Last Elf

The Last Elf by Silvana de Mari (translated from Italian by Shaun Whiteside) is a bittersweet tale of a young elf called Yorsh. Escaping the devastating floods which have destroyed his home and the last of his family, he sets out to find somewhere, anywhere, he may find peace (or at least a warm bed and some food). After forming an unlikely alliance with two humans (most humans hate elves!) he discovers a prophecy concerning the last elf – and the most powerful - and the last dragon, whose action will bring about much needed change to the embattled land. The trio set out on an adventure to find this dragon, and fulfil their destinies - meeting trolls, humans of varying qualities and discovering clues left by Yorsh’s parents along the way. Although this is a book aimed at young readers it deals with quite adult themes such as racism, greed, and loneliness. That said, it is well written and easy to follow, and even quite witty in places. It also features quite possibly the grumpiest dragon ever!
