Takeshi Yamada’s Coney Island Curiosities

Fossilised Fairy by Takeshi Yamada

Super-realist artist and visual anthropologist Takeshi Yamada’s ‘Museum of World Wonders’ on Coney Island is continuing the age-old tradition of Wunderkammer, or Cabinets of Curiosity. These collections of natural history specimens were intermingled with what is known as ‘Gaffs’ – that is, artificially created oddities such as the legendary Fijian Mermaid, to delight and confuse visitors. The Museum of World Wonders contains over 500 examples of Takeshi’s “post-super-realism and neo-taxidermy artworks”, including the 6-foot Fijian mermaid, fossilized fairy skeletons, human-faced insects, dragons and other weird and wonderful mythical beasties.
