Nigel has gotten it right, at least from all the reading I've done. He is clear about what is simply myth, and what possibly may be based on actual events and the documentation from the time of the Christian monks. (Who edited old legends and gathered material to put their own slant on it, of course.) There is a sort of even handed analysis of myths and legends, much as an expert in comparative religions would write.
