The Art of Samuel L Schmucker

The little known American artist Samuel Loren Schmucker was born in 1879 and died suddenly of heart failure in 1921. During his short life he overcame the limitations of his dominant arm having been disabled by polio in childhood to follow his lifelong passion for art, becoming the greatest American postcard painter during the Golden Age of postcards, c1898-1915. He studied at the prestigious Howard Pyle Institute, which also produced such notable contemporary artists as Maxfield Parrish and Jessie Wilcox Smith. Schmucker’s style was influenced by his tutor Howard Plye, Aubrey Beardsley and Gustav Klimt, and was a rare example of an American Art Nouveau painter and designer. In 1995/96, in the basement of a Montanta brewery, a collection of 88 original Schmucker watercolour paintings were discovered, many of which were previously unpublished. Since then a book, Samuel L Schmucker: The Discovery of His Lost Art, and sets of limited edition postcards have been published, in an attempt to give this talented artist the recognition he deserves.
