Holly Stacey’s ‘The Faerie Conspiracies’

14 year old Beth Andrews’ has enough to contend with, struggling at school with bullies, vindictive teachers and shallow friends. But she is also having to deal with her father’s mysterious disappearance some months previously, just the latest in a long line of family tragedies. Out of the blue a package arrives from her father, posted the day he disappeared, containing a series of letters written in code, an old family photo and a stone with a hole through it. Unable to make sense of it, Beth tries to get on with life as best she can until a random encounter with a stranger who warns her to beware of Faeries. Beth learns there are indeed such creatures and the web of lies begins to unravel as she uncovers just what happened to her father and of the age old enmity between human and Faerie-kind. Can Beth find a way to get her father back and destroy the Faerie menace before they destroy her?
Holly Stacey’s début novel, The Faerie Conspiracies is quite the page turner. It is written for the Young Adult market but there are some very vivid descriptions of the Faeries even I found unnerving! These folk are most certainly not good, and you would be most upset to find one of them living at the bottom of your garden. Real empathy is invoked in the reader by Beth’s predicament, as she struggles to uncover the truth about her father and discovers who she can and cannot trust. Although this books culminates with the humans getting the upper hand I get the feeling this is not the end. I would particularly like to know how the Faeries came to the human world in the first place. All in all this is a lively tale and I look forward to seeing what the author will come up with next.
