Kip Manley’s ‘serialized phantastick on the ten thousand things & the one true only’, City of Roses is an epic urban fantasy set in the city of Portland, Oregon. Jo Maguire, a highly strung, underemployed telemarketer meets Ysabel, a princess of unspecified pedigree. Jo rather unexpectedly becomes Ysabel’s guardian and caretaker, and now must make her way through the strange subculture of Ysabel’s decidedly odd family and friends (which involves rather more swordplay than she’s used to) – while Ysabel must now deal with a diet of frozen pizza and a job that requires her to call strangers on the phone and ask them how satisfied they are with their banks.
Thus far it has been published Dickensian-style in a series of chapbooks (14 in total so far). But you can now buy volume one “Wake Up…” (collecting the first 11 chapters) as a trade paperback or digital edition for those with e-readers.

The Gnome Lexicon

August 8th, 2011

In an age of e-readers and digital downloads it is a still great pleasure to hold and read a beautifully crafted book. And The Gnome Lexicon by Marcia Lewandowski, is one of those beautifully crafted books. Casebound with a dust jacket, each one of its 240 pages is a gnomish delight. The book chronicles over 70 individual types of gnome representing 59 cultures, and is organised by habitat. There are also 22 gnome tales exploring in true fairy tale tradition, the virtues of living kindly and generously.
The book is illustrated throughout by Nathan Vieland, who’s captivating pen and ink drawings perfectly capture the spirit of the gnome culture. Also rather enchantingly, much of the book is hand lettered by Kelly Lincon, giving a wonderful ‘ancient tome’ look to the pages.
The Gnome Lexicon is published by Pukwudje Publications and can be ordered here.
