Blue Moon Stones

January 9th, 2007

A curious, but effective alternative to traditional art prints is available from Blue Moon Stones. Handmade by Cynthia Enig and featuring artwork from some of today’s leading fantasy artists, these hand-cut slates appear as if the image was hand-painted. Each one if slightly different from the next, and can be hung on the wall or displayed on an easel. Artists include Amy Brown, Jayde Hilliard, Linda Biggs, Sue Millar plus many others.

Leather journals by Oberon Design

Founded in 1992, Oberon Design is a small artisan led company creating embossed leather and pewter goods. The finely tooled leather journals, chequebook covers, handbags and portfolios are made from custom-dyed cowhide and decorated with designs drawing on Celtic and Art Nouveau motifs. The range of pewter jewellery and bookmarks would make wonderful gifts, and there are some lovely leafy hair barrettes which would be perfect for a faery outfit.
Shown above is a leather journal with a fairy design.

On Virtual Cards UK you will find a vast range of contemporary fantasy artists whose images are available to send as e-cards. Simply browse by Artist or subject matter, select your card and fill in the details of your message and recipient. E-cards make excellent alternatives to their ‘real life’ counterparts – not only do they save you money but they are also kinder to the environment. Plus, they are suitable for lots of different occasions (even if you just fancy saying hello!).

The Saracino Collection

Christmas Faerie Godmother

The Saracino Collection of limited edition Christmas elves and faeries make wonderfully whimsical festive ornaments or gifts. They have been created by doll maker Maria Saracino, who has been sculpting elves and other characters from polymer clay for over 10 years. The 2006 trio of elves are thoroughly jolly little chaps in their striped outfits and pointy hats, while the Christmas Faerie Godmother is a beaming buxom lady to hang anywhere around the home. Speaking of Faerie Godmothers, Maria also makes an Inspiration Faerie, a Good Witch Faerie, and – my favourite – a Red Hat Faerie.

Capturing his wonderful sense of whimsy and innocence the Household Fairies portray some of the ‘little helpers’ found in the home – including the salt and pepper fairies, the catnip fairy and the nightlight fairy. Each resin figure is hand painted and stands around five inches tall.

The Friend Catchers

October 19th, 2006

Freshly Caught Faerie Folk

“The Friend Catchers specialise in the capture of fairy folk, using an ointment made from a four leafed clover we can protect you from their magic powers, so please never let them escape from their jars as we cannot be responsible for the consequences.”

Depending on your disposition, these freshly caught Fairy Folk from the Friend Catchers are either terribly cute or rather on the upsetting side, but whether you chose to liberate or continue the incarceration of your new found friend they won’t fail to raise a smile. You can chose from a selection of well-known faerie types from across Great Britain and Ireland, including Piskies, Brownies, Leprechauns and Hobs. If you find it all too inhumane (infaemane?) you can instead find a splendid selection of fairy doors, wall plaques, mirrors and light pulls with which to adorn your home.

Goblins of Labyrinth Statues

From the classic fantasy movie ‘Labyrinth’ come these splendid new Goblin statues. Based on Brian Froud’s character designs (as also seen in the ‘Goblins of Labyrinth book) the resin figures stand about 10 inches tall, and are limited to 500 pieces each. Plan B Toys are also bringing out a figure of the Goblin King Jareth and have a previous series based on the ‘Dark Crystal’.
Incidentally, there is a 20th Anniversary Edition of ‘Goblins of Labyrinth’ now available, chronicling the various nefarious denizens of the Labyrinth with Brian Froud’s art and accompanying text by Terry Jones.
