Celtic Juju Fantasy Sculpture

Julie Ann Rogers is a doll maker based in New Mexico. Entirely self-taught, Julie has been creating all her life, and working with polymer clay for the last 15 years. Her dolls are graceful characters, sculpted from polymer clay with soft bodies so they can be posed. I love the Fairy tassels – a sculpted head and torso with the tassel forming the skirt. They come with a hook so they can be hung up for display.

Belief is the driving force between Twig Wizardry, that, and an awful lot of Willow twigs. Their first house was created for a friend, but now this Colorado couple can make your dream Faerie residence from salvaged wood and antique metal. The interiors are bursting with handcrafted details, and are fully lit. The Willow twig furniture alone is awesome to behold, and the houses are so enchanting you could almost wish to be faerie sized yourself.

If you have ever fancied having a go at making your own faerie dolls, but didn’t know where to start, fret no more as Gnomon Workshop has today released ‘Creating A Faery Figure’ featuring Wendy Froud. In this two-disk DVD, Wendy guides you through the process of creating a character of your own – from a visualisation to help you access your imaginative spark, through building an armature and sculpting the figure, right through to creating the costume and adding the finishing touches such as wings and hair. ‘Creating A Faery Figure’ is available through the Goblin Market.
Be sure to also pick up the current Realms of Fantasy magazine for more on Wendy and Brian Froud’s work. Wendy’s ‘Autumn’ doll is featured on the cover, and inside an article by Ari Berk gives the reader a glimpse of the lives of these enchanted artists.
Gossamer Glen by Marchella

‘Enchanting Designs for Faerie Fanciers’ is the Gossamer Glen tagline, and right they are too. Artist Marchella began sculpting Faeries 10 years ago, driven by a desire to capture her own vision of Faerie. With their huge eyes, androgynous bodies and three-fingered hands these faeries do have an Otherworldly feel, and each one is a unique design. Also on the site are gift and garden items featuring the Gossamer Glen Silhouette faeries, including batik cushions, plaques, mugs and trinket boxes.

Aidamaris Roman sculpts the most fantastically sensual and playful one-of-a-kind art dolls. It is nice to see an artist creating dolls with more varied skin tones and I am particularly taken with the pregnant faeries and faerie and centaur lovers. Each doll is hand sculpted from polymer clay over a wire armature and finished with shimmering wings and flowing hair. The ‘in progress’ photos are a nice addition, and you can also view video tutorials or purchase Aida’s book ‘Sculpting the Dream’.
