Elventree Faerie Dwellings

July 15th, 2011

The delightful offerings from Elventree are sure to enhance any home with a little faerie magic. Each handcrafted house is made from wood found on the banks of a river, and decorated with stained glass windows, roof tiles, and quirky finishing touches like pots of mushrooms outside the front door. All the houses are illuminated with LEDs behind each window, making them into enchanting night lights. In addition to dwellings Elventree also create wonderful tree pendants, mirrors and suncatchers carved from ethically sourced yew.

Forgotten Forest Fantasy Figures

June 29th, 2011

The Forgotten Forest is home to witches, faeries, dragons, goblins and many more one of a kind sculpted art dolls. They are the work of Australian artist Michael Palmer. Coming from a film make-up and special effects background, Michael has been sculpting his fantasy creatures for over a decade, and his creations can now be found in collections around the globe. Michael’s work has won awards, and it is easy to see why, not only are the pieces extremely high quality, there is a certain irresistible black humour evident – like the Venus Faery Trap shown here.

The Art of Tatjana Raum

March 21st, 2011

Award winning artist Tatjana Raum creates absolutely exquisite art dolls and figurative sculptures. They embody that wilder aspect of faerie, mischievous and lively, quite a rare thing to capture. Tatjana’s talent also encompasses the sweet and whimsical too. If you prefer a more sculptural approach, the Wooden Spirits make use of interestingly shaped pieces of wood, which are brought to life with faces emerging from nooks and crannies.

The Art of Penny Thompson

November 29th, 2010

Award-winning miniaturist Penny Thompson is well known for her extraordinary figures and buildings created in 1/12th and 1/24th scale from Paper maché. Amongst the historical characters are found a host of faeries and fantasy folk including fauns and mermaids. Penny’s wonderfully wonky tree house is a firm favourite and her range of automata (a collaboration with Laurence St Ledger) are ingenious. The faeries’ wings flap up and down as the handle is turned, bringing the scene to life. Most of the automata and scenes are housed in glass domes making them wonderful display pieces, but my heart yearns for a tree house complete with faery family!

The Ewing Workshop

November 10th, 2010

We were absolutely blown away by the quality of James Ewing’s work on display at the recent Avalon Faery Fayre. James is an astounding craftsman with a background in blacksmithing and bladesmithing (amongst other things). His latest creation is the Radhost Complector, shown above. In James’ own words the Complector “shows its bearer the way to other world realms and planes of existence. Etched inside you will find many dead ends and oubliettes tempting you to stray from the paths that lead to Avalon, Atlantis, Asgard, Midgard, Helheim and tir Na Nog, home to the Fae folk and to the Cormon. But most important of all, you will find the path home.” Please visit The Ewing Workshop website for more pictures of this and other creations.

Gateways to Faerie

September 29th, 2010

The amazing creations of Fairy Woodland have featured previously on Fae Nation. Now artists John Curtis Crawford and Bridget Wolfe bring us Gateways to Faerie, a 2-disk DVD which takes the viewer on a journey of discovery. The documentary film shows us the value of seeing with our imagination – and gives us permission to believe what we see, while the second disk shows you how to build your very own Faerie House step-by-step.

Dead Faerie Specimens

September 20th, 2010

Swedish artist and propmaker Jacob Petersson has created a collection of wonderfully macabre dead faerie specimens, including faeries in jars and mummified gnomes. I particularly like the Red Cap shown above and the taxidermied Faun head. They’re just the thing for an intrepid Victorian faerie hunter to show off on the drawing room mantelpiece…

Kat Soto’s Candy Jar Faeries

March 18th, 2010

Doll artist Kat Soto has once again collaborated with San Francisco store Shreve & Co on a stunning Spring window display. The Candy Jar Faeries are inspired by traditional sweets and 18th century costume, and sit daintily atop jars filled with candy. You can see the whole collection on The Dollsmith.
