The Art of Armorel Hamilton

November 11th, 2009

Readers of FAE magazine will already be familiar with some of Armorel Hamilton’s work (she drew the faeries in the logo and has also contributed interior illustrations). Now with the launch of her new website we can all marvel at these wonderful creations. Armorel is both a sculptor and painter, and has recently directed her first short film (watch below). This is a world of ethereal faeries and whimsical creatures, and even the odd unicorn. The creatures in particular have a magical quality… one of them came home with me after the Avalon Art Exhibition and I am pretty sure he is getting up to mischief every time my back is turned!

Evidence of Fairies by Charm Foundry

Stumbled across on Flickr, this fantastic offering from Charmfoundry, American artist Kate Phillips. Evidence of Fairies is a little assemblage of a Fairy crown and tiny skull, apparently found under an Oak tree in Scotland. Very convincing!

Far Far Away

From Wales comes self taught sculptor Sara Rhys who makes utterly charming little Faerie Folk. Each semi-poseable doll is unique, with hand sculpted face, hands and feet and a hand stitched outfit. Every one has their own distinct character and I wouldn’t be surprised if they arrived with more than a little Faerie magic!

Secrets of the Hollow Hills

Mummified Fairy

A year on from ‘the greatest Fairy hoax since the Cottingley Fairies‘, in which the mummified remains of a ‘fairy’ were discovered in Derbyshire, attracting world-wide attention, the artist behind the prank is still creating dead fairies. Dan Baines is no stranger to illusion and mystery as he makes Victorian magic props for a living, and now after the interest shown in the mummified fairy he is also offering one of a kind, horribly realistic dead fairy sculptures for sale. It is also possible to commission your very own dead fairy, and what Cabinet of Curiosity would be complete without one?

Deb Wood - Enhanted Hearts

Deb Wood is a figurative fantasy artist from Midwest USA. She has been sculpting since 1988 and is highly accomplished – each figure is realistically detailed and dressed in intricate costumes, they even have real eyelashes. They are all one of a kind, and use only the finest materials gathered from all over the world. In addition to the pretty faerie ladies and tiny babies, Deb also sculpts fantastically kitsch elderly faerie godmothers and beautiful African Queens, so there is something for everyone. Over the years Deb has designed several lines of figures for gift companies, and is currently working on a new range for release in 2008/09.

The Art of Kat Soto

March 21st, 2008

By Kat Soto

Just before Christmas we featured a series of faeries created by Kat Soto for a San Fransicso store’s window display. Today I return to Kat’s beautiful website to take a peek at her faeries and fairy tale creations. With over 23 years as a professional sculptor and modelmaker, the quality of Kat’s work is unsurprising. The dolls have finely sculpted faces and bodies with ball jointed arms, and the fabric costumes are quite simply amazing!
